TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF.
I’m a Massachusetts native, but have been in Houston since 2009. I work for a financial technology company and live in Montrose with my wife Kristen and son Cole (2 ½). When I’m not being a dad, working or getting swole at Live Oak, I can be found playing hockey (yes, there is ice hockey in Houston) or holding down a barstool at The Hay Merchant.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DOING CROSSFIT AND WHAT TIMES DO YOU ATTEND? WHAT MADE YOU START?
I’ve been doing Crossfit for three and half years, all at Live Oak. I’m part of the morning crew, 5:30am. That way I’m halfway through my workout before I really wake up and can talk myself out of going! But also it’s a good time to workout and not take away from family time. I started CrossFit because I was stuck in a stale routine at LA Fitness and needed a break from the monotony. I haven’t been bored since!
WHAT ARE YOUR CROSSFIT GOALS?
Short-term: I try to set at least one new 1-Rep Max every month.
Long-term: Keep doing CrossFit well into my 40s (it’s less than 6 months away!)
WHAT IMPACT HAS CROSSFIT AND LIVE OAK HAD ON YOUR LIFE IN AND OUT OF THE GYM? WHAT CHANGES HAVE YOU SEEN IN YOUR OVERALL HEALTH AND FITNESS LEVEL SINCE STARTING?
Endurance is the first thing that comes to mind; I have a better second wind than I’ve had in a long time. I see that both in class and on the ice where I’m chasing after kids half my age. I’m also sore... A lot. Which is a good feeling! And of course I’ve met a lot of great people and Brian.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CROSSFIT WORKOUT/MOVEMENTS?
So many to choose from! I’ve always had strong thighs from years of skating, so I was immediately not terrible at Back Squats. I don’t hate seeing those on a WOD.
WHAT IS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE CROSSFIT WORKOUT/MOVEMENTS?
This could be a David Letterman Top Ten list. But my most hated has to be Kelly. Wait, if I say Kelly, does that mean we’re going to do it soon? If that’s the case, I really hate ROMWOD.
WHAT IS ONE FUN THING OR TALENT ABOUT YOU THAT WE MAY NOT KNOW YET?
I made it to the final question on HQ Trivia a few weeks ago. And if any of you have actually won, I don’t want to hear about it. Let me have this.
LASTLY… WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE TO THOSE JUST STARTING OUT IN CROSSFIT?
The great philosopher Mike Tyson once said “Everyone has a plan ‘til they get punched in the mouth”. CrossFit is going to punch you in the mouth or more literally your joints will be sore, you’re going to get blisters and might drop a wall ball on your face. But keep showing up, it gets easier and it’s the most fun I’ve had working out. When you get past the first few weeks of learning the movements, you’ll find a lot of satisfaction in the continuous improvement.
