November '18 Member of the Month: Anabel Thompson

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF.
I’m a fully local Houston gal married to a fully local Houston guy. We even went to Prom together but… I was a miserable failure of a date!  Luckily, Steve didn’t give up on me. We have 2 kids and hope for more.

I grew up racing sailboats and horseback riding before I got into team sports in middle school. No one else in my family really got into (or knew anything about) sports. I ran cross country, played soccer and ran track all though middle and high school. In college, I played D-3 soccer and ran track. I like to think of myself as the worst and slowest member of my D-3 teams. I eventually quit to focus on my collegiate drinking but became an athletic trainer so I could still be a part of a team. 

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DOING CROSSFIT AND WHAT TIMES DO YOU ATTEND? WHAT MADE YOU START?
I’ve been doing CrossFit for 3.5 years. I started 3 months after having my first baby when I was in a low and lonely place. I missed working in the ICU but wasn’t ready to go back. Plus, I was hopelessly out of shape. Lesley & Lydia lured me to a class without disclosing it was CrossFit. I might not have started if I had known.

I attend the MWF 9am “Mom’s Class”. It’s not only for Mom’s and, “we’re not like regular moms, we’re cool moms” so come work out with us some time you don’t have to go into work! 

WHAT ARE YOUR CROSSFIT GOALS? (one short-term goal, one long-term goal)
Okay, honestly I have about 30 CrossFit goals. My Ultimate CrossFit Lifetime Achievement Award Goal would be a muscle- up. 

For now, I’m just trying to string together some T2B and Kipping pull-ups before the year is over.

WHAT IMPACT HAS CROSSFIT AND LIVE OAK HAD ON YOUR LIFE IN AND OUT OF THE GYM? WHAT CHANGES HAVE YOU SEEN IN YOUR OVERALL HEALTH AND FITNESS LEVEL SINCE STARTING?
CF & CFLO give my week and life structure and a sense of community. I love being part of something that celebrates me being strong rather than skinny. Even though I have a truck driver’s eating habits and a deep thirst, CFLO has kept me somewhat in check (Holidays happen to all of us). It’s energizing and exciting to still be making (mostly small) improvements in my performance.

Also, I fully drink the CrossFit Kool-aid and my husband (not a CrossFitter) never misses a chance to rip on me for it!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CROSSFIT WORKOUT/MOVEMENTS?
There are so many I like! Power cleans, kettlebell swings, deadlift, back squat, front squat, running, rope climb, even burpees.

WHAT IS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE CROSSFIT WORKOUT/MOVEMENTS?
Ugh, I don’t even want to say because I know you’re just going to make me do more of them. As an Oompa Loompa, I’m absolute garbage at WallBalls. Pretty much anything that is an overhead movement (OHS, etc) really messes with my head! 

WHAT IS ONE FUN THING OR TALENT ABOUT YOU THAT WE MAY NOT KNOW YET?
I can start a bow-drill fire and properly fold a fitted bed sheet.

LASTLY… WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE TO THOSE JUST STARTING OUT IN CROSSFIT?
It is so fun! Try different classes until you find what works for you. Don’t give up. Take it easy and ask for help or feedback. We all start as beginners and it’s a supportive and positive group.
