TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF.
My name is Sara Hyder, married to Scott, and former Store Manager for lululemon turned stay at home mom to Mitch (2) and Jane (11 months). I'm a yankee originally from rural Berkley, Massachusetts (google it if you'd like). I moved to Houston in 2008 and never looked back. I lived briefly in New Orleans from 2012 - 2015. I've been back here since mid 2015 and I can't imagine living anywhere else!
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DOING CROSSFIT AND WHAT TIMES DO YOU ATTEND? WHAT MADE YOU START?
I've been doing CrossFit since 2012, but have been doing it consistently since January/February of 2016. I started because my friend Annie needed a partner for a scaled competition and I foolishly agreed to it. I thought, "how hard could a scaled competition be?" Even though we came in second to last it ignited my love for it. (Side note - we didn't come in dead last only because a woman on the other team injured her knee mid workout.)
You can usually find me and Jane at the mom's class at 9a, MWF. Although, I have gone to the 6:30a class and I think it's safe to say I'm a fan favorite there - everyone loves how much I talk.
WHAT ARE YOUR CROSSFIT GOALS? (one short-term & long-term goal)
Short-term: I want to perform one strict pull-up by the end of 2018.
Long-term: I want to be an active and strong person for as long as I'm able.
WHAT IMPACT HAS CROSSFIT AND LIVE OAK HAD ON YOUR LIFE IN AND OUT OF THE GYM? WHAT CHANGES HAVE YOU SEEN IN YOUR OVERALL HEALTH AND FITNESS LEVEL SINCE STARTING?
I love, love the camaraderie that CrossFit fosters and it's abundant at Live Oak. The mom's class is something I look forward to each week - I get to workout hard with my friends! I notice my #gains in the little things. For example, I live in a 3 story town home and I'm no longer winded climbing all 3 flights at once. Or, when I load myself like a pack mule with a kid in one arm, a diaper bag on my back, and grocery bags hanging off my other arm I'm able to successfully (and safely) make it to my destination.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CROSSFIT WORKOUT/MOVEMENTS?
Back squats, 100%. Deadlifts are a close second.
WHAT IS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE CROSSFIT WORKOUT/MOVEMENTS?
Snatches. Seriously, who likes to snatch? My life flashes before my eyes every time I perform one.
WHAT IS ONE FUN THING ABOUT YOU THAT WE MAY NOT KNOW YET?
This is tough since I'm such an open book. Okay, a fun thing about me is I love to volunteer! I'm part of the Junior League Houston and through that I volunteered at the Houston Area Woman's Center last year. This year I'll be volunteering at the Baylor Teen Health Clinic helping teenage mothers antepartum and postpartum. Additionally, I volunteer with the Human Rights Campaign Houston as a member of their Federal Club committee. A talent is giving pretty sage advice - see answer to #8.
LASTLY… WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE TO THOSE JUST STARTING OUT IN CROSSFIT?
Yes, I love doling out advice! Don't be intimidated since you can scale everything to your skill level, finding a good coach or coaches your comfortable with is important otherwise you could become discouraged or injured, form is crucial - refine that and the rest will follow, and finally, you are definitely more capable than you think so go for it!
