August '18 Members of the Month: Braden and Shea Parker

TELL US ABOUT YALL.
We were both born and raised in the suburbs of Salt Lake City, UT. We met in Las Vegas and attended undergrad at Utah State together. From there we bounced around, living in NYC while Shea went to Physician Assistant school and Braden went to medical school, then Chicago for Braden's residency training, before finally settling in Houston 2 years ago. Braden now works as an ER doctor and Shea works as a Physician Assistant in the ER as well.  In our spare time, you will probably find us eating...  after living in several big cities with great food/drinks, we have become total foodies.  

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DOING CROSSFIT AND WHAT TIMES DO YOU ATTEND? WHAT MADE YOU START? WHO'S IDEA WAS IT?
Shea - almost 2 years. Braden about 1 year. Given our weird work schedules, our workout times vary, but we commonly attend the noon class or the 9am mom's class. Braden likes the 9am mom's class, but has avoided it recently because he keeps getting picked on by the kids. 

Shea started CrossFit because she was trying to find a workout that was challenging and that involved heavy weights (and never regretted the decision).

Braden started because Shea basically talked/guilted him into working out with her. 

WHAT ARE YOUR CROSSFIT GOALS? (one short-term goal, one long-term goal each)
Braden- bench 240 by the end of the year, and to beat Shea in any AMRAP/METCON, and obtain 0.5 BU on all 1 rep- max lifts (BU=BRIAN UNIT - Brian's 1 rep max ... aka 0.5BU= half the weight that Brian lifts).

Shea- ring muscle up, and to finish Murph next year under 30 min! And to NOT let Braden beat her in an AMRAP/METCON

WHAT CHANGES HAVE YOU SEEN SINCE JOINING LIVE OAK?
Braden doesn't have chicken legs anymore!!!

WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST CROSSFIT MOMENT? 
Braden- First bar muscle up... but nobody believed that I did it

Shea - Finishing Kelly under 24 min and not getting time capped.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CROSSFIT WORKOUT/MOVEMENTS?
Braden - Bench press and handstands.

Shea - Any workout that is challenging.

WHAT IS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE CROSSFIT WORKOUT/MOVEMENTS?
Braden -  Turkish get-ups... because they suck (and not in a good way).

Shea - Snatches... I'm terrible at them.

WHEN YOU’RE NOT CROSSFITTING WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO?
Travel the world! Or explore new restaurants and bars. And play with Piper girl... our dog.

WHAT IS ONE FUN THING OR TALENT ABOUT YOU THAT WE MAY NOT KNOW YET?
Back in the day, Shea was a cheerleader... crazy I know. When we met, Braden used to have long hair that would flip out underneath a beanie, which he had on at all times, even in the summer. He has pictures to prove it. 

LASTLY… WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE TO THOSE JUST STARTING OUT IN CROSSFIT?
The tallest blade of grass gets cut first... strive for mediocracy.
