TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF.
I was born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas. I have a relatively small family that seemed to grow every seven years. When I was 7 I got a brother, at 14 a sister, and a pug at 21.
In 2012 I graduated from the University of Texas at Dallas where I received a degree in Physics with a minor in beer drinking. After university I moved to Houston (Sugar Land) to work at a small geophysical firm. When the price of oil tanked in 2016, I took a leap to work in the wild world of finance (Fi-NANCE not FIN-ance). Two of my current colleagues are also Live Oak members, Tim C and Juan P.
When I'm not at the gym or at work you can find me in the Heights. I'll be reading, cooking, taking long walks on the beach, binging Netflix, or nerding out on some technology-related project.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DOING CROSSFIT AND WHAT TIMES DO YOU ATTEND? WHAT MADE YOU START?
I was curious about Crossfit for a few years before I actually did my first WOD. I remember watching the 2015 games thinking "I can do that" (I can't do that).
The end of the month will be my 2 year anniversary at the gym. My first experience at Crossfit Live Oak was the 2016 Halloween community workout. I brought a costume with me, but chickened out in the car 10 minutes before class and didn't wear it in. Amy programmed a brutal 45 minute partner chipper - I got capped. I was absolutely exhausted and extremely frustrated for not being able to finish. After a solid 2 hour recovery nap, I was hooked.
You can find me at the gym most weekdays during one of the evening time slots + most Saturdays + Sunday open gym.
WHAT ARE YOUR CROSSFIT GOALS? (one short-term goal, one long-term goal)
Short-Term Goal: Consistently string together 10+ butterfly pull-ups and/or participate in a CrossFit competition.
Long-term Goal: In a nutshell be good at all the things. If I had to name one thing specifically it would be to improve my Olympic weightlifting.
WHAT IMPACT HAS CROSSFIT AND LIVE OAK HAD ON YOUR LIFE IN AND OUT OF THE GYM? WHAT CHANGES HAVE YOU SEEN IN YOUR OVERALL HEALTH AND FITNESS LEVEL SINCE STARTING?
There are so many things to say about the positive impact Live Oak has had on my life in addition to the obvious changes in my health and fitness level. I'm in the best shape of my life. I'm much more conscientious about what I eat. I haven't been sick in the last 18-24 months. It has helped managed my stress. Lastly it has built incredible mental strength, which has paid dividends inside and out of the gym. There is a clear difference in my day-to-day routine when I've skipped the CrossFit multiple days in a row.
I have never enjoyed anything as much as I enjoy CrossFit. Huge shout out to Brian, the CFLO staff, and a great community for helping me at every step and for putting up with my BS.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CROSSFIT WORKOUT/MOVEMENTS?
Dumbbell curls, barbell curls, & kettlebell curls. Functional fitness is cool, but the glamour muscles are the most important.
WHAT IS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE CROSSFIT WORKOUT/MOVEMENTS?
Whitten (2018 Labor day WOD) destroyed me.
WHAT IS ONE FUN THING OR TALENT ABOUT YOU THAT WE MAY NOT KNOW YET?
My real name isn't Teddy... and I can juggle.
LASTLY… WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE TO THOSE JUST STARTING OUT IN CROSSFIT?
Pain is weakness leaving the body. Kidding!
Don't be intimidated by others in class or the whiteboard - it's about you becoming a better you. Come in, give 100%, and you will reap so many rewards.
